WHAT DOES ‘SINGLE SOURCE’ PROTEIN MEAN IN DOG FOOD?
‘Single source’ protein means that there’s only one animal protein in our dog food or cat food. If it says turkey, you’ll only ever get turkey and it’s the same for lamb or duck. We cannot guarantee that traces of other proteins sources aren't present in our formulations as our products are produced in a factory that handles multiple proteins.
DOES JAMES WELLBELOVED FOOD CONTAIN PALM OIL?
You can be reassured that we don’t use palm oil in any of our products.

We have feedback from consumers that our naturally hypoallergenic recipes can be suitable for pets with sensitive tummies. Please make sure you consult a vet if you observe adverse food reactions or allergies in your pet.
WHAT MAKES YOUR DOG FOODS NATURALLY HYPOALLERGENIC?
To make our naturally hypoallergenic food, we exclude those ingredients from our recipes which surveys suggest are more likely to cause food intolerances, such as: wheat, dairy, beef, pork, eggs, soya.

CAN YOUR FOOD HELP IF I HAVE AN OVERWEIGHT DOG?
Compared to our standard adult foods our light dog food has more fibre to help your dog feel fuller for longer. It also has increased levels of protein so they maintain muscle, whilst losing fat. Added taurine supports the heart, while JW+ is added to support the joints that are under more strain with overweight dogs.
WHAT IS GRAIN FREE DOG FOOD AND IS IT RIGHT FOR MY DOG?
A lot of our dogs simply enjoy a grain free diet but some dogs that have sensitivities to cereals may actually need to eat a grain free diet to avoid the unpleasant symptoms of food intolerance. We have crafted a range of meals that do not include cereals in the recipe such as rice and barley but use peas and potatoes instead.
As our products are produced in a factory that also handles grains, we cannot guarantee that traces of grains are not present in our formulations. Please make sure you consult a vet if you observe adverse food reactions or allergies in your pet.
DOES YOUR DOG FOOD CONTAIN ANY ARTIFICIAL COLOURS, FLAVOURS OR PRESERVATIVES?
We choose the finest quality ingredients nature has to offer. Each one has its own health benefits, as you’ll discover. What you won’t see, however, is any added artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Not now, not ever.
CAN I ALTERNATE FREELY BETWEEN FEEDING MY DOG THE TURKEY, LAMB, DUCK OR FISH VARIANTS?
Each of our dog food recipes are appealingly delicious in their own way and we hope your dog will love them all. Many dogs can change their food without experiencing any form of tummy upset. However we would recommend you introduce new foods gradually over 3-5 days. If your dog suffers from food intolerance it may be best to stick with your dog’s favourite James Wellbeloved recipe!
DO I NEED TO BUY WET DOG FOOD AS WELL AS DRY?
Our dry dog food is complete and balanced, so there is no need to add wet, however your dog may prefer the addition of our wet food. So feel free to mix them together to add to their enjoyment. For advice on what quantities to feed them, see our feeding guides.
WHY IS JAMES WELLBELOVED RIGHT FOR MY SMALL DOG OR TOY DOG?
We believe your small dog deserves the very best from nature, and from life. That’s why our small breed range has everything they need to eat well and live well. From cranberry extract, which we believe may help urinary issues more common in a small dog to green tea with its anti-bacterial properties that may help improve dental health in smaller mouths.
WHY IS JAMES WELLBELOVED RIGHT FOR LARGE DOGS?
Big dogs need even more love. That’s why our range for large dogs gives them all of nature’s love. There’s more concentrated nutritional goodness packed into each of our kibbles, and as large dogs often eat too fast, our large breed kibble has a special shape which slows down the rate of eating! We add Taurine to support their harder-working hearts, while joints are cared for with glucosamine, chondroitin and herbs.

DO I NEED TO GIVE MY DOG ANY OTHER FOOD BESIDES JAMES WELLBELOVED?
No. Our food is 100% complete and balanced, with everything they need. From delicious dry and wet meals to tasty treats we hope they’ll love.

HOW DOES HOMEMADE FOOD COMPARE TO JAMES WELLBELOVED DOG FOOD?
James Wellbeloved food is complete and balanced and contains all the nutrients your pet needs to thrive. It has been carefully prepared and cooked in our own factory and then tested to ensure it is safe for your pet. Many owners feed table scraps but these shouldn’t exceed 5% of the pet’s daily calorie intake.
I ACCIDENTALLY BOUGHT LARGE BREED FOOD, CAN I FEED THIS TO MY REGULAR SIZED DOG?
Our Large Breed food is tailored to dogs weighing 25kg and over. If your dog weighs less than this, then our Adult food is better tailored to them, and we’d advise for them to stay on this if possible!
If you do decide to keep your dog on the Large Breed Adult food, please be aware of the calorific difference between the two foods:
Depending on which flavour you feed, the regular Adult food is between 348-359kcal per 100g, and the Large Breed Adult food is between 364-376kcal per 100g.
We would advise you to work out how many calories you were feeding your dog on their previous feed, and then adjust the amount you feed them of the Large Breed formula to ensure not to overfeed!
CAN I SWITCH MY DOG TO JAMES WELLBELOVED DRY DOG FOOD STRAIGHTAWAY?
Your dog’s digestive system isn’t as quick as yours at adapting when switching diets. So, to avoid them getting an upset tummy we recommend gradually introducing James Wellbeloved or any new food slowly over the course of 5-7 days.
We suggest:
25% new diet with 75% of the previous diet for 2 – 3 days
50% new diet with 50% of the previous diet for 2 – 3 days
75% new diet with 25% of the previous diet for 2 – 3 days
100% new diet
Don’t forget you can still give them our wet dog food as well to add to their enjoyment.

DO YOU MAKE PUPPY FOOD?
Of course – we believe a naturally healthy diet should start as early as possible. Our puppy food is nutritionally balanced and is gentle on their developing digestion. And we have both grain-free and rice-based recipes so you can chose the best food to suit your puppy.
WHAT MAKES YOUR PUPPY FOOD SUITABLE FOR MY PUPPY?
Everything. We want the very best for your puppy. That’s why our puppy food contains higher levels of protein and fat to support growth and the right amounts of calcium and phosphorus for their growing bones. The kibbles are smaller too, to suit smaller mouths.
WHEN SHOULD I START TO FEED MY PUPPY JAMES WELLBELOVED PUPPY FOOD?
Our puppy foods are suitable for feeding from 6-8 weeks.
WHEN SHOULD I WEAN MY PUPPY?
From around 2-3 weeks puppies can be offered small amounts of kibble moistened in warm water several times a day. Gradually reduce the liquid until the puppies are fully weaned. All moist food should be replaced on a regular basis.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PUPPY AND JUNIOR FOOD?
Puppy and junior food are both formulated for growing dogs. All puppies once weaned at around 6-7 weeks should be fed on James Wellbeloved puppy food.
Depending on the adult size of the dog your puppy may benefit from being fed a junior food designed as a follow on food for medium and large breed dogs. It’s all to do with the age at which dogs mature For example small dogs will be mature at 6 months and can gradually move onto their own small breed adult food then; whilst large dogs will continue to grow well into their second year and will benefit from being fed a large breed junior food.

HOW DO I KNOW WHEN MY PUPPY IS A ‘GROWN UP’ DOG?
The age of maturity for dogs is related to their adult size. So your small terrier will be a grown up at around 6 months whilst a Great Dane will not mature until it is over 18 months old. It’s important to provide the puppy and junior foods your dog needs to ensure the correct rate of growth and a healthy adult life. Check out our feeding guides for more details.
WHY SHOULD I FEED MY OLDER DOG DIFFERENTLY?
From around 7 years of age some dogs can be considered as seniors! Older dogs have different nutritional needs. Our senior dog food has been created specifically for this phase in life with more Vitamin C and E to help support their immune system and fewer calories, for the less active.
HOW SHOULD FEEDING ROUTINES CHANGE DURING A DOGS PREGNANCY?
Gestation (pregnancy) in the dog lasts for around 9 weeks.
Growing multiple puppies inside her then producing enough milk to feed them all for 5 to 8 weeks takes an enormous amount of energy. For the first 6 weeks of pregnancy, she will be OK with her normal food allowance but, in the last 3 weeks, she will need up to 30% more food than before she became pregnant and, when her milk production is at its peak in weeks 3 to 4, she will need up to 3.5 times her normal food supply. It is simply not possible for her to eat enough food to supply all the energy she needs to produce that milk so she also converts some of her body fat into extra energy and one would expect her to have lost up to 10% of her normal weight by the time the pups are weaned.
Because of this, she needs to be in peak condition at mating. If she is underweight, the unborn puppies can be smaller and there will be a higher risk of mortality when they are born. If she is overweight, the unborn puppies can be too big which can make for difficult births.
Because she needs so much energy but has a limited appetite, she needs a food with higher levels of energy than normal. Our Puppy and Large breed Junior foods are both designed to also meet the requirements of the lactating bitch and should be fed instead of the normal adult food from the 6th week of pregnancy. Using our James Wellbeloved puppy food also gives the puppies an introduction to their first solid food. Multiple meal-times allow the bitch to eat more and, in weeks 2 to 4 of lactation, it is a good idea to give her constant free access to food.

WHAT IF MY PET DOESN’T LIKE THE PRODUCT?
If your pet doesn’t like our product, this shouldn’t be anything to worry about. Just like us, pets can be choosy about what they fancy to eat and have likes and dislikes too.
It sometimes helps to tempt them a few times and serving food at room temperature is what they prefer.
If you’re changing their food, always remember to mix small amounts of the new food with their usual food for a few days, to avoid any upset.

James Wellbeloved food is naturally hypoallergenic which is not only great for everyday health and wellbeing but is less likely to cause an adverse food reaction in your cat.
To make our naturally hypoallergenic food, we exclude those ingredients which surveys suggest are more likely to cause food intolerances, such as: wheat, dairy, beef, pork, eggs, soya.
We also only use a single source of animal protein in our recipes, and that includes the gravy and fat, which means in our turkey recipes for example, turkey is the only animal protein you will find.
WHAT IS AN EXCLUSION DIET FOR CATS?
An exclusion diet is one that excludes certain ingredients that are thought to commonly cause adverse food reactions.
At James Wellbeloved we also exclude every other animal protein except for the one named on the bag and in our recipes the gravy and fat we use come from the same animal too.
Although there is only one animal protein in each of our foods we give you a choice of duck, fish, turkey or lamb so there is sure to be one to suit your pet.
IS JAMES WELLBELOVED CAT FOOD SUITABLE FOR AN EXCLUSION DIET?
Yes, our naturally inspired pet food recipes have absolutely no wheat, dairy, beef, pork, eggs or soya, the most common causes of food intolerances, and have a single source of animal protein. Our fat and gravy comes from the same animal too.

Unfortunately pet obesity is a growing problem in the UK which is why James Wellbeloved light food is specially formulated if you have an overweight adult cat. It contains around 85% of the calories of standard adult cat food.

Compared to our adult and senior cat foods our light cat food contains higher levels of protein and lower levels of fat to promote weight loss and lots of fibre to keep your cat feeling fuller for longer.

CAN JAMES WELLBELOVED HELP WITH KEEPING MY CATS TEETH HEALTHY?
It’s important to keep your cat’s teeth clean and healthy. The most effective way of reducing plaque and calculus is regularly brushing your cat’s teeth.
However because this is not always possible and can sometimes be distressing for you and your cat, we have created an oral health range.
The larger size of the kibble means the cat’s teeth pierce each biscuit and this helps mimic the action during tooth brushing.

Each of our cat food recipes are appealingly delicious in their own way and we hope your cat will love them all.
Many cats can change their food without experiencing any form of tummy upset however, we would recommend you introduce new foods gradually over 3-5 days.
If your cat suffers from food intolerance it may be best to stick with your cat’s favourite James Wellbeloved recipe!
DOES MY CAT NEED WET CAT FOOD AS WELL AS DRY?
Our dry cat food is complete and balanced and provides everything your cat needs to thrive. The pouches made with either lamb or turkey and healthy vegetables can be fed either as a tasty topper or as a meal by themselves.
Be sure to check the feeding guidelines and always have fresh drinking water available.
FEEDING YOUR CAT
CAN I SWITCH MY CAT TO JAMES WELLBELOVED DRY CAT FOOD STRAIGHTAWAY?
Your cat’s digestive system isn’t as quick as yours at adapting when switching diets. So, to avoid them getting an upset tummy we recommend gradually introducing James Wellbeloved or any new food slowly over the course of 5-7 days.
We suggest:
25% new diet with 75% of the previous diet for 2 – 3 days
50% new diet with 50% of the previous diet for 2 – 3 days
75% new diet with 25% of the previous diet for 2 – 3 days
100% new diet
Don’t forget you can still give them our wet cat food as well to add to their enjoyment.

If your cat is showing one or all of the following signs and you have ruled out any other possible triggers such as fleas for example, they might be reacting to something in their food.

Our naturally hypoallergenic cat food excludes ingredients that are known to cause food intolerance and will help them feel happy, healthy and full of life.
IS MY CAT LACTOSE INTOLERANT?
Just like we can be lactose intolerant, so can our cats. After weaning, their ability to digest lactose (the sugar in milk) greatly reduces.
Therefore it is quite possible they are lactose intolerant, particularly if they experience an upset tummy or sickness after drinking milk.
LIFESTAGE & PREGNANCY
HOW SHOULD FEEDING ROUTINES CHANGE DURING A CAT PREGNANCY?
Growing multiple kittens inside her then producing enough milk to feed them all for 5 to 8 weeks takes an enormous amount of energy. By the last week of pregnancy, she needs up to 1½ times as much energy as before she became pregnant. When her milk production is at its peak in weeks 3 to 4, she needs up to 3 times her normal energy supply. It is simply not possible for her to eat enough food to supply all the energy she needs to produce that milk so, from early in her 9-week pregnancy, she starts to build up extra reserves of body fat which she can then use to top up her energy from food during lactation.
Because of this, she needs to be in peak condition at mating. If she is underweight, the unborn kittens can be smaller and there will be a higher risk of mortality when they are born. If she is overweight, the unborn kittens can be too big which can make for difficult births.
From the first or second week of pregnancy, she needs unrestricted access to a high energy food, and we strongly recommend that she has one of our Kitten foods throughout pregnancy and lactation. Make sure there is always food in her dish and that she can always get to her dish. The Kitten foods are high in energy and formulated to meet all the mother’s mineral and vitamin requirements during this time. They also have the advantage of supplying the kittens with the correct food as they get close to weaning.
When weaning is complete and the kittens are removed, the mother can be encouraged to stop producing milk by fasting her for a day, then gradually building up to her normal allowance over the next few days.
DO YOU MAKE KITTEN FOOD?
Of course – we believe a naturally healthy diet should start as early as possible.
Our kitten food is nutritionally balanced and is gentle on their developing digestion.
WHAT MAKES YOUR KITTEN FOOD SUITABLE FOR MY KITTEN?
Everything. We want the very best for your kitten.
Kittens grow at 15 times the rate of human babies, so our kitten food has all the protein and nutrients they need. Plus, our hypoallergenic recipes are gentle on their developing digestion.
WHEN SHOULD I CHANGE MY KITTEN FOOD TO CAT FOOD?
Your cat should gradually change over to adult food at around 12 months of age.
WHY SHOULD I FEED MY OLDER CAT DIFFERENTLY?
The best cat food for older cats over 7 years is one that meets their nutritional needs.
Our senior cat food has added glucosamine and chondroitin to support joints and taurine to support their heart. Lower phosphorus levels also help reduce the risk of kidney problems.

HAVE YOU STOPPED SELLING FERRET FOOD?
We understand how important it is to make sure your pet has the food they love most. Following ongoing disruption to supply in recent months, we’ve now discontinued our ferret products.
We’re really sorry for the inconvenience caused. We recommend visiting the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association’s website for details on other manufacturers producing food suitable for ferrets and advice on how to change diets safely.
If you have any concerns over your ferret’s diet, we advise speaking with your vet.
HOW DO I BECOME A STOCKIST?
The easiest and most cost-effective option would be to visit your nearest wholesaler and purchase the products through them. If they don’t stock the items you are interested in, they may be able to order them in for you.
If you are a wholesaler and wish to order from us directly, you need to have been trading for 6 months or more and place orders to a minimum of £100,000 per annum.

WHAT IS THE CRITERIA FOR JOINING THE BREEDER CLUB?
To join the James Wellbeloved Breeder Scheme, you need to meet the following criteria:
• Based in the UK
• Own a minimum of 1 breeding bitch or 2 entire males (own registered KC affix or KC/IKC assured breeder documentation must be provided)
• OR own a minimum of 1 queen or 2 entire males (own registered prefix documentation must be provided)
• OR registered with local council as a breeder and regulations and license requirements adhered to
PLUS
• Breeders must not breed from a brood bitch or queen if the litter would be born before the brood bitch or queen is 12 months old, or after 8 years old
• New litters must be registered with James Wellbeloved within 4 weeks of birth
• Breeders must confirm information about individual breeding stock/puppy details
