Kitten Food FAQs
While a kitten might safely nibble adult food, it isn't ideal for their daily needs. Kittens are growing rapidly and require higher levels of protein, fat and specific minerals like calcium to support their developing bones and muscles. Adult food is designed for maintenance and lacks the concentrated energy a bouncy kitten needs. To give your little one the best start in life, it’s pawesome to stick to a dedicated kitten recipe that supports their healthy growth and overall wellbeing until they are fully grown.
Kittens usually begin their journey toward solid food around three to four weeks of age. This process, known as weaning, starts with offering very small amounts of soft food while they are still nursing. By six to eight weeks, most kittens will be happily munching on a complete kitten diet. We recommend starting with a mixture of warm water and kibble or a delicious wet kitten food to make the transition gentle on their tiny tummies. It’s a big milestone in their journey to becoming healthy adult cats!
Kittens have tiny tummies but huge energy needs! Because they are growing so fast, they need to eat small, frequent meals throughout the day—usually three to four. The exact amount depends on their age and weight; you’ll find a helpful guide on our James Wellbeloved™ kitten packs. It’s important to monitor their progress and adjust as they develop. Providing the right balance of nutrients now ensures they grow into strong, healthy cats. If you’re ever concerned about their growth, your vet is always there to help.
Technically they can, but it’s a bit like a human eating high-calorie sports snacks every day! Kitten food is incredibly energy-dense to support growth. For a fully grown cat, this extra protein and fat can quickly lead to unwanted weight gain. Unless your vet has recommended it for a specific reason, such as supporting a nursing mother or a cat that needs to gain weight, it’s best to stick to an adult recipe. This ensures your cat stays at their healthy, ideal weight while getting the right nutrients for their life stage.
Kittens have very sensitive digestive systems, so it’s best to stick to their specially formulated kitten food. If you want to give them a tiny treat, small pieces of plain, cooked chicken or white fish are safe. However, avoid seasoned meats, dairy (most cats are actually lactose intolerant!), and anything with onions or garlic. Since kittens are in such a critical growth phase, human foods can easily upset the nutritional balance they need. Stick to pawesome kitten-safe treats to keep their tummies happy and their growth on track.
Kittens can start exploring dry kibble from about four weeks old. At first, their milk teeth are still coming in, so it’s a great idea to soak the kibble in a little warm water to soften it into a mush. As they get closer to eight weeks, they’ll have the jaw strength to enjoy the crunch of dry food on its own. Eating dry food is excellent for their dental health as they grow. James Wellbeloved™ kitten kibble is specifically sized for smaller mouths, making it easy to munch.
