It’s not recommended. Puppies need a very specific balance of energy, protein, and minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus, to ensure their bones and joints develop correctly. Adult dog food is designed for maintenance and doesn't provide the "building blocks" required for a growing puppy. Feeding adult food too early can lead to developmental issues. To ensure your pup grows up to be a healthy, happy dog, keep them on a dedicated puppy recipe until they reach adulthood, usually between 10 and 18 months depending on their breed.

While those puppy-dog eyes are hard to resist, a puppy’s tummy is very delicate. If you must share, small amounts of plain, cooked turkey, chicken or carrots are safe. Always avoid toxic foods like chocolate, grapes, onions and anything containing xylitol. Be mindful that human food is often very calorie-dense for a small pup and can lead to fussy eating habits. For their long-term wellbeing, it’s best to reward your furry friend with healthy puppy treats that won't upset their nutritional balance or their tummy.

The transition to adult food depends on your puppy's breed and size. Small breeds often finish growing by 10 to 12 months, while large breeds can keep growing until they are 18 to 24 months old! Generally, you should switch to adult food once they have reached their full height and weight. Moving to adult food too early can deprive them of essential growth nutrients.
